Allow me to recommend Dala-Floda Inn for a perfect experience in country living while in Dalarna, the Dalecarlia region of Sweden. Dotted with thousands of lakes, deep virgin forests and huge rocks left from receding glaciers during the Ice Age, Dalecarlia is home to folk festivals, folk arts, and ubiquitous rambling log cabins painted with Falu Red, a pigment residue from the nearby iron and copper mines. The Inn at Dala-Floda sits on such a lake, but has its own air - of being in Provence, the South of France, rather than the North of a cold Scandinavian land. This is partially due to the profusion of ferns and flowers and herbs growing just outside the door, partially to the international atmosphere provided by its owners, Christina and Paul Aarts. See more of the garden. |
Christina is Swedish, a language teacher who met and married Paul, a Dutch-man
on the small island Lamu in Kenya,
East Africa in 1975. They searched Sweden for serveral years before finding
an abandoned inn to restore.
It took four years, as they did most of the work themselves: a painted, trailing
vine with flowers graces
the dining room ceiling, the 5 single and 9 double rooms
(all with private baths) sport furniture purchased
at country auctions. African rugs, paintings and
accent pieces are covering the floors and walls and tucked into corners.
They raised their two sons at the inn - who are now grown up and sometimes
return back to give a helping hand.
Even their dog is imported from Africa.

Dining room
This is an ecological, environmental friendly
hotel where they use locally produced meat and vegetables.
Both the restaurant and the hotel itself are ECO-labelled!
