Allow me to recommend Dala-Floda Inn for a perfect experience in country living while in Dalarna, the Dalecarlia region of Sweden. Dotted with thousands of lakes, deep virgin forests and huge rocks left from receding glaciers during the Ice Age, Dalecarlia is home to folk festivals, folk arts, and ubiquitous rambling log cabins painted with Falu Red, a pigment residue from the nearby iron and copper mines. The Inn at Dala-Floda sits on such a lake, but has its own air - of being in Provence, the South of France, rather than the North of a cold Scandinavian land. This is partially due to the profusion of ferns and flowers and herbs growing just outside the door, partially to the international atmosphere provided by its owners, Christina and Paul Aarts. See more of the garden.

Christina is Swedish, a language teacher who met and married Paul, a Dutch-man on the small island Lamu in Kenya,
East Africa in 1975. They searched Sweden for serveral years before finding an abandoned inn to restore.
It took four years, as they did most of the work themselves: a painted, trailing vine with flowers graces
the dining room ceiling, the 5 single and 9 double rooms (all with private baths) sport furniture purchased
at country auctions. African rugs, paintings and accent pieces are covering the floors and walls and tucked into corners.
They raised their two sons at the inn - who are now grown up and sometimes return back to give a helping hand.
Even their dog is imported from Africa.

This is an ecological, environmental friendly hotel where they use locally produced meat and vegetables.
Both the restaurant and the hotel itself are ECO-labelled!

The arts and crafts of Dalarna offer an enormous treasure of quality objects.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS IN THE VICINITY:
Falun the capital of Dalarna province, is well worth a day-tour. (On your way to Carl Larsson).
You must visit Falun Copper Mine, it shows an important part of Swedish history,
and going down into it offers a very exciting and interesting experience. The museum home
of painter Carl Larsson is each time as inspiring. (in Sundborn just North of Falun)
Selma Lagerlöf lived in Falun and You can see her studio in Dalarnas Museum.

Drive about 45 min North of Dala-Floda and You reach the pretty
touristic town Leksand situated at the South of Lake Siljan.

The wooden Dala-Horses are manufactured in Nusnäs,
interesting to see them beeing carved and decorated..

The other famous artist Anders Zorn's home and museum in Mora),
is another highlight.(See map)
A variety of music festivals and concerts are available in many of the small towns.
Of special importance is Musik vid Siljan the second week in July, Dalhalla, the new festival stage,
a former limestone quarry is very well worth visiting. ( one hour's drive from here).

Here in Dala-Floda we have our own cultural festival week the Flo-week from Sunday to Sunday.
It starts on the first Sunday in July. Days and evenings are filled with programs;
a boat regtta, concerts, exhibitions, courses, lectures and guided tours both in the
village and following the old cattle paths in the vast forests. You can even try paddling in the rapids.
The Floda folk music group and the dancers give a couple of shows.

Flo-vicku ends by the old traditional weekend Cow's Midsummer party
inviting you to a small scale open market and later an impressive concert in church.
Being a community of only 1000 inhabitants, many of these are talented and still practice crafts and music.

Late afternoon before walking to the church, we arrange an old fashioned
Jässbössbol,
a traditional Floda Banquet at our inn.
This year the theme is Buffé à la Linné;
300 years celebration to the honour of the biologist Carl von Linnées birthday.
We serve home made cheeses and tasty butter from the fäbod,
smoked salmons, special herrings and much more.

This is a VERY SPECIAL, country inn, which I am sure everyone would enjoy any time of the year.
Sincerely Yours Joyce Hoffer, Colorado
